What it usually means
Differences of sex development are a group of conditions, each with its own biology and its own follow-up. Care is individual, and it is coordinated with the other specialists involved.
For transgender and gender-diverse patients, endocrine care follows current professional guidelines and includes monitoring over time.
What I look at
- Previous evaluations, karyotype and hormone results
- Pubertal stage and growth
- Bone health, which is followed during any hormonal treatment
- The patient's own goals and questions
- The involvement of the rest of the care team
How I approach it
Conversations are medical, unhurried and free of assumptions. Families and patients are given the information they need to make decisions with a full picture.
Monitoring, expected effects and possible risks are explained before anything begins, and reviewed as care continues.
